Tour Operators Initiative

Transat A.T. Inc. is a member of Tour Operators Initiative for Sustainable Tourism Development (TOI). The non-profit organization, whose Secretariat is in Madrid, aims to promote sustainable development and responsible management in the tourism industry, and to encourage tour operators to make firm commitments in this vein.

TOI is first and foremost a group of tour operators and tourism companies that have recognized the importance of responsible management and sustainable tourism, and have decided to play a leading role. TOI is actively supported by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). TOI also has the support of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and of the Center for Environmental Leadership in Business.

Since 2000, TOI has relentlessly pursued its efforts to promote sustainable tourism. It helps tour operators implement their programs by promoting best practices, especially in internal and supply-chain management, and at destinations. TOI has developed and continues to fine-tune customized tools for tour operators. It also gives them a forum in which to exchange ideas, and liaises between industry and relevant programs developed by UNEP, UNESCO and UNWTO. TOI works to broaden support for sustainable development among other players in the tourism sector, including tourists themselves. It works to increase its members’ visibility and is becoming a leader in the area of environmentally, economically, socially and culturally responsible tourism.
