Our climate action plan

Climate change is one of the greatest concerns of our time, and the aviation industry acknowledges its crucial role in transitioning to a low-carbon economy. Our climate action plan is aligned with the goals of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) on reducing emissions and contributing to international efforts to address global warming.

  • Renewing our fleet

In 2020, Air Transat retired the last aircraft from its old Airbus A310 fleet. These will be replaced by Airbus A321 LR aircraft, a new generation of planes recognized as the most energy efficient in their category. This transition represents a 15% reduction in fuel consumption, 50% less nitrogen oxides and 50% less noise. Since 2019, Transat has acquired 12 of these aircraft, with seven still awaiting delivery.

  • Using sustainable aviation fuel

Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 80% over its lifecycle compared to traditional jet fuel. SAF is essential for achieving the industry's net-zero goal. Aware of the important role we can play in developing a local sustainable aviation fuel industry, we are actively involved in the Canadian Council for Sustainable Aviation Fuels (C-SAF). C-SAF’s mission is to bring together key industry players and the government to accelerate the commercial production and use of low-carbon sustainable aviation fuels in Canada.

  • Enhancing our energy efficiency program

To enhance our operational efficiency, we rely on a rigorous aviation fuel management program that was implemented in 2004. It includes initiatives like single-engine taxiing, reducing weight aboard aircraft and closely monitoring fuel consumption.
