Croatia’s capital city has skyrocketed in popularity over the past decade, so much so that the Zagreb airport has had to build a new terminal. And once you get into the city from there, you’ll see why.

Many of Zagreb’s choice hotels sit on Ban Jelačić Square, the centre of the city and the heart of the action. From the square, you can walk virtually anywhere in town, and is actually the best way to get around town, as Zagreb’s weather rarely gets too unpleasant, and the city is relatively flat.
Upper Town (known there as Gornji Grad) is an 11 minute stroll from Ban Jelačić and definitely worth a visit. It’s the oldest part of the city and certainly its most charming. Local shops and restaurants sit along cobblestone streets surrounding St. Mark’s Square, and just to the east, Park Opatovina is the perfect spot to stretch out and enjoy a short break in the sun before carrying on.
After a few days in Zagreb, you’ll be ready to split for Split, a beach town on the Dalmatian coast. A perfect spot for travelling families, the beaches are full of life and the sea is full of life to see with snorkel and mask.
Zagreb Zoo inside Maksimir Park has been a family favourite since 1925. Today, there are over 225 species to see including a fabulous collection of monkeys. For chest-beating of a different kind, see if you can get a ticket to a GNK Dinamo soccer game in Maksimir Stadium. Athletics are huge in Croatia, but nothing’s more popular than the beautiful game.
