Lisbon, Portugal: Europe’s western gate and sunniest capital

Great hotels are to be found in every part of this capital city. A stroll through Alfama, Lisbon’s oldest neighbourhood, is positively romantic. Stop to share a ½ L of vinho tinto (red wine) and some world-famous Portuguese seafood. Going out at night? The city’s trendy bars are in and around Bairro Alto or on the quays. Be sure to swing into A Brasileira for a coffee in the shadow of Fernando Pessoa’s statue, a homage to one of the country’s great poets.

Next door to the Jeronimos Monastery is Lisbon’s Maritime Museum with amazing model ships, an interactive children’s section and an adjoining planetarium. If you’re more of an active bunch, visit the Parque das Nações for its cable car rides, city biking, water gardens and bowling. Kids are into animals? Lisbon’s zoo has over 2,000 species to see, including a spectacular dolphin show. And if the weather isn’t cooperating, you can seek shelter at the and take in a puppet show.

Diversity is a big part of what makes Lisbon special, so there’s something for everyone. For those who are into modern architecture, Parque das Nações (Nations Park) is a must-see in Lisbon. It was home to the ’98 Expo, and is now a residential, commercial and recreational area. For the more historically minded visitors, the Jeronimos Monastery is worth a look. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and for good reason, as it’s among the most impressive structures on the continent. And the city also offers an assortment of options for getting around. On the one hand, there’s a modern subway system that takes you where you want to go. On the other, the cute, quaint trams are perfect for a slow trek through town.
