You can’t go to Cartagena without exploring its beloved showpiece, the Old Town. Munch on mango biche as you wander the cobblestone walkways, and don’t forget to take pictures. The bougainvillea cascading from the terraces of 16th-century colonial homes is as photogenic as it is fragrant. When you’ve had enough hustle and bustle, escape to the Islas de Rosario, a small archipelago surrounded by crystal clear Caribbean water. Snorkel, dive or spend the night in one of the island cabins for rent.
If you consider yourself a foodie, make your way off the beaten path to Cecilia’s in the area known as Pescado Frito for river turtle, shark and cow’s tongue. To find it, wind your way through the maze of stalls at Mercado Bazurto and ask a local to direct you. Foodies also flock to one of Cartagena’s best-kept culinary secrets, La Cevicheria in the old walled town centre. Tiny and unassuming, this restaurant serves the best ceviche you’re likely to find anywhere. They make a sinus-clearing chili sauce too!
Widely considered to be the best salsa club in town, Café Havana is a well-known haunt for Colombian celebrities, from ex-presidents to supermodels. Hang by the enormous bar for the best people watching. For a ritzier evening, check out La Casa de la Cerveza, a bar with stunning views perched high on the city walls. Order up an empanada or two and chill to the nightly DJ’s tunes, all at a surprisingly reasonable price.

Due to a change in the entrance conditions for Colombia, we must inform you that as of November 1, 2023, Canadian citizens will have to pay an entry fee of $85 CAD per person. This fee must be paid to the Colombian authorities upon arrival in Colombia and may be paid by credit card.
