Fort-de-France: the bustling capital of Martinique

Packages to Fort-de-France will not be offered during the 2022-2023 winter season.

Capital city and home to Martinique’s international airport, Fort-de-France is a charming collection of church steeples and brightly painted colonial homes decorated with wrought iron balconies. In the throes of a massive redevelopment project, it’s on its way to being one of the most inviting cities in the Caribbean.

Fort-de-France Your Way

The brightly painted façades on Rue de la République make for a charming stroll through Fort-de-France’s historic district. The quaint traditional wooden houses and colonial buildings that line the way are nothing short of romantic. Built in the 19th century, the Théâtre Fort-de-France showcases all kinds of performances and cultural events. Check out their schedule for a date night à la martiniquaise.
Family playgrounds
Lush and steamy, the Jardin de Balata is a private botanical garden boasting 3,000 varieties of tropical plants from around the world. Kids especially love the feeding station teeming with hummingbirds, and the suspension bridges that allow you to walk through the rainforest section at tree level. Not only is La Savane a beautiful park in and of itself, it’s also a great opportunity for teaching your family a little history. On display is a headless statue of Empress Josephine Bonaparte, Martinique’s most famous daughter. Vandals decapitated her as retribution for slavery being brought back to the island to benefit her family’s plantation.
Travelling with friends
Fort-de-France is a town that loves its markets. Pick up a little something special or just take in the island atmosphere at the Marché des Poissons (the colourful fish market), the Marché des Fermiers (the bustling local farmers’ market), the Marché aux Épices (for spices), the Marché Artisanal (for crafts) and of course the Grand Marché. It’s always a good idea to get there early in the morning for the best pickings!

Good to know

Presence of Sargassum in Mexico and the Caribbean
Depending on the weather conditions, winds and tides may bring large quantities of Sargassum to shore. Since seaweed moves with the ocean currents, quantities may vary by place and day. Transat would like to inform its clients that this natural phenomenon beyond its control affects several parts of Mexico and the Caribbean. Although the presence of this brown seaweed is greater than usual, our hotel partners are making every effort to clean the beaches when necessary.
