Roatan, Honduras is as beloved by backpackers as by the all-inclusive resort crowd. Surrounded by a staggeringly diverse coral reef which you’ll see on a flight to Roatan, the island’s main attraction is diving, yet the holiday of a lifetime awaits even those who aren’t scuba enthusiasts.

Discover Roatan

A diving paradise
When the destination you choose boasts the world’s second-largest coral reef after the Great Barrier, you’d better get your dive on. It’s said that you can see 90 percent of the Caribbean’s marine life here, so feast your eyes on sea turtles, stingrays, moray eels and more.
Delicious food
When’s the last time you had a decent coconut-stung wahoo? Mavis & Dixie, on the spit leading out from Half Moon Bay, serves some of the most sought-after island seafood in Roatan. Great service too!

Make your way through mangroves and island wildlife for dinner at Hole in the Wall Floating Restaurant. Accessible only by boat, this community favourite offers all-you-can-eat seafood nights on the weekends. Fill up on lobster tails and prime rib to your heart’s content.
Fun outings
Named after a lizard that can run on water, the Monkey Lala is a concoction of delicious island flavours. Sweet and powerful, it’s the perfect cocktail for sipping by the seaside.

Kick off your shoes on Sunday night at Ronny’s Barefeet Bar and Restaurant, a beachfront eatery famous for its BBQ chicken and local bands. Their sign reads: No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problem. And with tables and chairs dug right into the sand, you know they mean it!
Honduras, as recommended by Travel Basecamp
The little island of Roatan to the north of Honduras is both a Caribbean paradise and scuba diving mecca. Located near the Mesoamerican Reef, Roatan hosts some of the best diving in the world (not to mention just about any water sport you can think of). With a storied history involving pirates stashing treasure among mangrove forests and the British Buccaneers building settlements in the island’s many small bays, Roatan is the perfect destination for your next adventure. Rain or shine, the weather of Honduras is subtropical in lowlands and temperate in the mountains. Whether you’re in the mood for soaking up intriguing culture, on a hunt for long lost buried treasures or simply hanging back with a cold Salva Vida in one of the many cool waterfront joints of West End, Roatan will cater to all of your needs and more. Roatan Your Way

Couples

For a more traditional couples holiday, book a romantic all-inclusive getaway at Barefoot Cay’s immaculate resort. Swing together in a hammock on your own private beach, enjoy a candlelit dinner served at your bungalow, and wake up to fresh flowers every morning.
Family playgrounds

A diving alternative perfect for beginners and kids, the Bay Islands Underwater Museum is a snorkelling adventure through some of Roatan’s most beautiful reefs. See Mayan artefacts, a Spanish galleon shipwreck and more, in water the depth of a swimming pool. ''Roatan is the world’s third most beautiful island'' as voted by travellers on TripAdvisorAll kids want to do at Little French Key is hold the monkeys, but the private island resort on Roatan’s south shore does have more to offer (though admittedly nothing quite as awesome). Go diving in crystal-clear waters, rent a kayak, and feast on delicious local cuisine like plantain chips and lobster.
Travelling with friends

Roatan’s coral reef is internationally renowned, but dedicated divers love exploring the area’s wrecks as well. The top three are El Aguila, the Odyssey and the Prince Albert.
